A Coastal Gem: Visiting Southport, NC

Tucked along the banks of the Cape Fear River, Southport, North Carolina is the kind of town that feels like a storybook come to life. With moss-draped oaks, historic homes, and a waterfront that begs you to slow down and breathe deeply, Southport offers a refreshing blend of Southern hospitality and maritime charm.

History Around Every Corner

Southport’s roots stretch back to the 1700s, and you can feel that legacy as you stroll through town. Start your journey at the Fort Johnston-

Southport Museum and Visitors’ Center, where you’ll find maps for a self-guided walking tour. From the Old Smithville Burial Grounds to the River Pilots Tower, each stop reveals a layer of the town’s rich past — including tales of pirates, privateers, and Civil War skirmishes.

For maritime enthusiasts, the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport is a must. It’s free to enter and packed with interactive exhibits that explore everything from indigenous mariners to WWII naval history.

Lights, Camera, Southport

Movie buffs will love discovering that Southport has been the backdrop for several films, including Nicholas Sparks’ Safe Haven. You can even spot filming locations around town and browse memorabilia at the museum. (There is a copy of Safe Haven at Shell Cottage for your watching pleasure)

Morning Vibes & Waterfront Wanders

Start your day with a cup of coffee from Southport Coffee Co. or Saucy Southerner, then head to Waterfront Park. With swings overlooking the river, a scenic pier, and views of passing boats, it’s the perfect place to soak in the coastal atmosphere.

Local Shops & Eats

Southport’s downtown — especially Howe Street — is lined with boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. Whether you're craving fresh seafood, Southern comfort food, or a scoop of ice cream, there’s something for every palate. And yes, parking is free — a rare treat in a tourist town.

Parking & Restrooms

Many streets in downtown Southport offer free street parking, especially around Howe Street and Bay Street. Just be mindful of posted time limits.

Most shops do not offer a public restroom. There are two public restrooms that will make your visit to downtown Southport more enjoyable:

Public restroom #1: near the corner of Howe and Nash streets.

Public restroom #2: Just behind historic fort Johnson
